Tournament Formats

For the 2021 season we are only accepting a select formats of tournament play. As we expand into the 2022 season we are planning to add additional formats to sanctioned events.

Currently accepted formats are:

    • Matchplay (head to head, as well as group play)
    • Strike Out (2 player and 4 player majority groups)

The “value factor” of each format is discussed below. A perfect “value” tournament will award 30 points.

Matchplay Style

With this format, each “game played” will add 1.5 point to the value factor, up to 30 points. A “game played” is defined as the number of rounds played multiplied by the number of games per round (multiplied by 1.33 for 3 player groups, 1.66 for 4 player groups). This is based on the assumption of a “best of X” scenario in the path of most resistance, for example,  if the tournament is setup for best of 5 for each round, it will assume all 5 games had to be played to determine winners in each round, so after round 6 the maximum 40 points for this tournament “value factor” to be achieved.

Note: the games played calculation is factored higher for 3 player and 4 player groups. It takes longer to play a 3 or 4 player group and we recognize that.

Strike Out Style

This format has many different ways that it could be potentially run. We are planning in the 2022 season to support many more variations of this style, but for this season we are going to make the assumption that groups are either head to head or the majority are 4 player groups (3 player groups as needed, but majority must be 4 player groups). For 4 player groups the bottom 2 get a strike. For the incidental 3 player groups, only last place will take a strike.

Points for this style are awarded similarly to the matchplay style rules. Each “game played” will add 1.5 point to the value factor, up to 30 points. A “game played” is defined as the number of rounds played multiplied by the number of “games per round” ( multiplied by 1.5 for 4 player majority groups). This is based on the assumption of a “best of X” scenario in the path of most resistance, for example,  if the tournament is setup for best of 5 for each round, it will assume all 5 games had to be played to determine winners in each round. Just like with other formats, the points for this style will max out at 40 points.
